Canada-Alberta Productivity Grant: check training eligibility
An Alberta employer may be able to recover part of the cost of eligible staff training. Check the current provincial rules before you plan or start training.
What the current guidelines say
The 2026 Applicant Guidelines provide funding for 75% of eligible training costs, up to $5,000 per trainee per fiscal year, with an employer cap of $100,000 per fiscal year. These are program limits, not a quote or a funding approval. The province determines eligibility and the final reimbursement.
Training must meet the program rules
Training must address the employer's business needs and the trainee's current or future job. It must include interaction with a qualified instructor. Online training is considered delivered in Alberta.
Self-study and pre-recorded video or audio without instructor interaction are not eligible. Project-based research, including capstones and research papers, and basic soft or interpersonal skills do not meet the program's eligible-training requirements.
A course containing instructor-led technical instruction alongside projects, reflection or self-paced work needs a clear breakdown. Do not assume the whole course fee or every course hour is eligible.
Check the provider as well
The provider must be separate from the employer and must have been in business with training as its main activity for at least two years at the time of application. Instructors must meet the province's qualifications.
Formativelabz's eligibility as a training provider under this grant has not been confirmed. Do not rely on a Formativelabz course being reimbursable until the provider and proposed training have been checked against the current rules and the province's application decision.
Apply before training starts
The guidelines recommend applying at least 30 days before training starts. Training that starts before the application is received is ineligible. The portal must show Application Received, which follows the trainee's confirmation of the consent email.
Starting before approval leaves the employer responsible for all costs if the application is declined, rejected or only partly funded. Previous approval does not guarantee future approval.
Prepare a clear enquiry
Tell us your course of interest, team size, intended learning goal and preferred delivery format. Do not send employee names or confidential information. We can discuss the course outline, instructor interaction, delivery and fees so your employer can assess the proposed training against the program rules.
Formativelabz does not submit or approve grant applications on your behalf, and does not guarantee reimbursement.
